Betty Sue Smith Obituary

Betty Sue Smith, beloved wife, mother, nanny, sister, and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on August 12, 2025, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 75.

Born on March 13, 1950, to Casen Eldrige “Young Percy” Askew and Leodis Dickerson Askew, Sue grew up with strong family values and a spirit that would shine throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Donny Askew; and her great-granddaughter, Karsyn Lane Boles.

Sue spent most of her life in Broaddus, Texas, where she was a devoted member of the community and her home church. Sue proudly retired from the United States Postal Service. Known lovingly as “Nanny” to her grandchildren and “Sue Baby” to her dearest friends, she was a vibrant soul with a feisty spirit and a deep love for her family.

She is survived by her loving husband, Nolan Smith of Broaddus; her son, Nolan “Rip” Smith and wife Kassi of Lufkin; her daughter, Missy Hendrick of Lufkin; and her brother, ElRay Askew and wife Mary of Texas City. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Zach Smith, Bailey Smith, Kaydi Joa Boles, Colton Hendrick, Cailee Hendrick, and Heather Dunn as well as her 12 great-grandchildren, whom she adored beyond measure.

Sue was full of life and joy. She loved to cruise, travel and explore new places. She always stayed ready for her next adventure. Sue was known for her chocolate pies, never missing a ball game, and bossing Nolan around. She also cherished her time playing Bunco with her friends, where laughter and stories were always in abundance. Sue’s laugh could light up a room when you heard it.

Sue’s last words were simple: “I love Jesus,” and we can rest assured knowing she is hearing the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” She will be remembered for her warmth, wit, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends. Her memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew her.
