Donny Askew

Mr. Donny Askew, a longtime resident of the Broaddus/San Augustine area, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2024, in Lufkin.

He was born December 26, 1947, in Broaddus to parents C.E. and Leodis (Dickerson) Askew. As a youth growing up in Broaddus, Donny spent lots of his time at the family store, Askew Grocery, when he wasn't in school. Later in life, he settled in as the "mayor" of the Norwood community. 

Donny prided himself in being a part of the Masonic and Shriner brotherhood. He was also a lifelong member of Harvey Creek Baptist Church. He always had the best stories. the good and the bad--usually told on the front porch. For several years, Donny faithfully participated in the Broaddus annual parades with his mother as a clown.

Working as a welder was a great passion in his life. Outdoor life was also a major part of Donny's life as he enjoyed riding horses, hunting with his buddies, and farming goats. He also loved 4-wheeler riding with his grandchildren and spoiling them rotten. 

After the passing of his beloved wife, Jean, he said goodbye to his goats and to Lufkin to be his favorite people--grandchildren!

His survivors include a daughter, Heather Dawn Butler and husband Shaun Michael Butler of Lufkin; granddaughter, Hayden Jeanette Butler of Lufkin; grandson, Shaun Michael Butler II of Lufkin; brother, Ray Askew and wife Mary of Texas City; and a sister, Sue Smith and husband Nolan of Broaddus.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Askew; daughter, Kara Jeanette Askew; and his parents, C.E. and Leodis Askew.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, located at 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine.

Funeral services are set for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel. Committal service and interment will follow at the Broaddus Cemetery, located off Hwy. 147 in Broaddus.

Pallbearers: Shaun Butler, Rip Smith, El Ray Askew, J.W. Mixon, and Nolan Smith. Honorary pallbearers: Joe Dixon and Steve Flores.
