Mr. Earl Edward Chumley Jr., age 81, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Stone Creek Care Center.
Earl was born in Center, Texas, to Earl and Corine Chumley, Sr. on November 5, 1944.
He graduated from San Augustine High School in 1962. After graduation he worked for General Geophysical, and in 1962 while assigned to a job in Hearne, Texas, he met Verna Belle Dent, who became his loving wife on October 28, 1966, and remained by his side for 59 years. They were richly blessed by two loving and adoring daughters, two wonderful sons-in-law, and four amazing grandchildren, who he sacrificially loved and supported.
Earl continued to work in the industry with Geophysical Field Surveys where he served as president of the Data Processing Center until his retirement in Mississippi in 1993.
After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family traveling, camping, fishing in bass tournaments with his brother-in-law, and hunting including several trips to Alaska. He could talk with anyone about any subject, and he was willing to teach himself and others how to do anything. He loved playing marbles, cribbage, and dominoes. From hunting to stock market to politics to crypto market to Ole Miss sports, he loved learning. He was always wanting to help others and was ready to share what life had taught him. He appreciated his family’s love, support, and sacrifices towards helping enrich his quality of life. Someone very close to him once said, “Earl left some big footprints in the sand of earthly life.”
His survivors include his wife, Verna Chumley of San Augustine, Texas; daughters, Rae Ellen Chumley Brown and husband Travis of Millport, Alabama, and Linda Marie Chumley Thigpen and husband Howard of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, James Denton Thigpen, Cara Rae Brown, Avery Marie Thigpen, and Veronica Leigh Brown; sisters, Diane Chumley of Dallas, Texas, and Kathie Chumley Haley and husband Richard of San Augustine, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other loved ones.
