Mrs. Emma Anita Bennett of San Augustine County, Texas, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Nacogdoches Medical Center at the age of 87 years, 9 months, 2 days.
She was born January 7, 1935, in Middlesboro, Kentucky, to parents Annie Roberta (Satterfield) Pratt and William McLain Pratt. Mrs. Bennett had lived in many areas of the United States, but the family has called San Augustine, Texas, “home” for the past thirty years.
After high school, Mrs. Bennett began nursing school. However, in those days, women were not allowed to be married and go to nursing school. She left nursing when she met the love of her life, and they married January 2, 1954. She eventually worked in health care in administrative office roles. Locally, this work included offices of Dr. Jacques Kestelyn and San Augustine Memorial Hospital. She had also worked as an Avon sales representative manager and was a Tupperware sales manager, which earned her their signature station wagon. She worked as a census worker on multiple occasions, which is a job that only happens once every ten years.
She was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church; had previously been active with the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW and was also active with the Denning Volunteer Fire Department chili suppers. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading. Mrs. Bennett loved children… she had a passion for helping raise and care for many children outside her family. Mrs. Bennett was a member of the Satterfield Family Association.
Her survivors include her children, Patricia Grissom of Nacogdoches, Texas, Victoria Huss of San Augustine, Texas, Robert Bennett of Franklin, Indiana, Karen Gorby of North Salem, Indiana, Amanda Jones of San Augustine, Texas, James Bennett of Bradenton, Florida; and Scott Bennett of San Augustine, Texas; her beloved sister, Dollena Akin of Indianapolis, Indiana; longtime best friends, Nancy Matlock, Barbara Cunningham and Natalie Florencig; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Bennett, on February 5, 2022; her parents, W.M. and Annie Pratt; a son, Willie Bennett; and her brother, Bill Pratt.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, October 14, 2022, at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, located at 4216 County Road 220, off FM 354 in San Augustine County, Texas.
