Gail Mitchell Obituary

Gail LaFern Murphy Mitchell was born November 17, 1934, in Joyce City, Arkansas, to Mial G. and Inez Murphy. She passed away on May 14, 2025, in Port Arthur, Texas, and was 90 years, 5 months, and 27 days old.

She is survived by her only daughter, Merinda "Wendy" Goyens, her husband, Kelvin; and her only grandson, Kelvin Wade Goyens. All are residents of Nederland, Texas.

For her early life, she lived in Norphlett, Arkansas, where she graduated high school. She continued her education at Ouachita Baptist College for about a year. She then married the love of her life, Kenneth Wade "Mitch" Mitchell.  They moved to Texas in July of 1964 where they ran a successful business, M & M Chemical Can Co., until they retired in 1983. She loved to travel, take cruises, and enjoyed her family and friends.

Her pride and joy was her grandson, Wade.  She always lit up when he was around and was very involved in his life and loved to hear about all his adventures during his time he spent in California.  She loved it when he came back to Texas and was closer.  She was so proud of his artwork and his talent and always encouraged him to pursue his dreams.

God allows special people to come into our life along the way. She loved and cherished Lisa Riggs, Brittany and Zack Crocker, Kennedi and Brennan Crocker and Memaw along with Dennis and Ruth Ketcham, Grace McCoy and longtime Arkansas friends--Alyce Henley and Patsy Henley. Too many stories to tell!

She was an avid Arkansas Razorback fan and nothing thrilled her more than to hear the calling of the Hogs!  Whooo Pig Sooee! During the Christmas season, she loved seeing Santa's sleigh pulled by 8 Razorbacks that her son-in-law Kelvin had made for her.

Gail Mitchell was a strong, independent woman until her health began to fail about a year ago. She lived a long life of ninety plus years professing Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Having served faithfully for many years until her health kept her from attending church. She had been an active member of Lakewood in Zavalla, Texas.  She was truly a treasure and will be missed by those of us who loved her.

A graveside service is planned for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Broaddus Cemetery, located off Hwy. 147 North in Broaddus.
