Hughie Welton Mixon, “Hugh,” was born on July 24, 1939, in the Caddel Community of Broaddus, Texas, to Ernest Mixon and Minnie Mae Wimberley Mixon. He passed away Saturday, February 7, 2026. He graduated from Broaddus High School in 1957 and later attended Stephen F. Austin State University, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. While in college, Hugh was an active member of the Future Education Majors Club and served as an officer.
Hugh was well known as a good and faithful servant of the Lord, a strong pillar in his community, an avid golfer, and a man with a strong work ethic who left a lasting positive influence on countless lives.
His love for education and desire to be a shining light to others began at a young age, inspired by one of his favorite teachers and principals, Coach Marion Neil. Hugh began his career teaching history and coaching football and basketball at Ricardo ISD and Waco La Vega ISD. While at Garrison ISD, Hugh felt the Lord calling him into the ministry and enrolled into Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, where he graduated.
Hugh later moved to Gladewater, returning to education as a coach and teacher at Gladewater ISD before becoming a high school counselor, assistant principal, and then principal. During this time, he also served as pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Gilmer and Union Grove Baptist Church. After his tenure in Gladewater, Hugh moved to Union Grove ISD, where he served as principal and later superintendent. He then accepted a position with Waller ISD as a counselor and later assistant superintendent, where he served for many years before retiring.
While in Waller, Hugh met his beloved wife of 38 years, Dorothy G. Taylor. They were introduced by their sons, John David and Morris, who only wanted their parents to date, not marry, so they could remain “just friends” instead of becoming brothers. God had other plans and brought this wonderful family together.
Hugh eventually decided to return to his beloved hometown of Broaddus. He and his brother Keith purchased a local store that became known as Mixon Brothers. Hugh often joked that he didn’t really work there, he simply enjoyed visiting with everyone who came in, usually over a pot of coffee while sitting on a bucket.
Never one to stay retired for long, Hugh returned to public service as Superintendent of Broaddus ISD, serving several more years and overseeing the construction of the high school and gym. He later retired for the final time.
Throughout these years, Hugh also pastored several area churches, including Yellow Ridge Missionary Baptist, Macune Missionary Baptist, Bethel Missionary Baptist, and Harvey Creek Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a lifetime member.
Hugh remained active in civic service, serving on numerous boards, including President of Region 7, the San Augustine Appraisal District, and the San Augustine Hospital Board.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Dorothy Mixon; daughter, Raschel Boyd of Bedford, Texas; son, Morris Riley and wife Lisa of Caddo Mills, Texas; brother, Keith Mixon and wife Faye of Huntington, Texas; brothers-in-law, Lee Taylor and wife Lu of Palestine, Texas; Paul McGarity and Janet of West Point, Mississippi; and Jamie Taylor of Rye, Texas.
Sisters-in-law include Karen Dubec of Manchaca, Texas, and Alice Brownlee and husband Joel of Broaddus, Texas.
Grandchildren: Janie Mixon, Patrick Mixon, Summer Copeland, Alec Mixon, Haileigh Boyd, Trevor Riley, and Trinity Riley. Great-grandchildren: Khloe Copeland, Kyler Copeland, and Russell Snowden.
