Jessie Merrill McKinney

Mr. Jessie Merrill McKinney, age 91, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Monday, December 19, 2022, in San Augustine.

Jess was born in Choice, Texas, to Emmett and Josie McKinney on January 18, 1931. He moved to Houston when he was 16 and started working at a gas station.

While in Houston he met the love of his life, Dorothy Ann Wiess. They dated for three years and were married June 30, 1950.

Jess got a job working for Standard Oil of Indiana in Corpus Christi. He transferred to Alvin, Texas, working at the Hastings Gas Plant as a roustabout, then an operator, before going into maintenance. Standard Oil became Amoco and Jess retired in 1986 with 35 years of service.

After retirement, he and Dot moved to San Augustine in 1990. They were members of First Baptist Church and later Liberty Hill Baptist Church. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Josie McKinney; daughter, Judy McKinney; his beloved wife of 67 years, Dorothy McKinney; sister and brother-in-law, Bernadine and Brodie Riner; and brother and sister-in-law, Vincent and Nell McKinney.

He is survived by his son, Jerry McKinney and wife Liz of San Augustine; son, Mike McKinney and wife Sophie of Alvin; son, Billy McKinney of Alvin; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 26, 2022, in the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel, located at 316 West Columbia Street in San Augustine.  Officiating will Bro. Frank Holrath and Bro. Jim Moss.  Interment will follow at Old Salem Cemetery in Shelby County, Texas. 

Visitation will be Monday, December 26, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine.
