Marvin "Buddy" Ivie

Mr. Marvin "Buddy" Ivie, 89, was born February 10, 1937 in Jacksonville, Texas, and passed away early on July 26, 2026 at his home in San Augustine, Texas, with family by his side after a courageous battle with lung cancer. The youngest of 5 children born to James Cleon Ivie and Lena Milstead Ivie, Marvin grew up in Karnack, Texas, being known as Buddy.

His father passed away when he was 16 and the family moved first to Rusk, Texas, then to Lufkin, Texas, where he graduated from Lufkin High School in 1955. He went to work in the press room for the Lufkin Daily News and had begun selling advertising there when he was drafted into the U.S. Army, spending most of his military time as an Intelligence operative in Okinawa intercepting and recording Morse code messages until he was honorably discharged. He went to work temporarily in Port Neches as Editor, an affiliate of the Lufkin News, returning to Lufkin as Advertising Director and later worked as advertising director for the Houston Chronicle for many years, building a lifelong career in newspaper and print advertising. At one time, he was the youngest advertising director in Texas. His direct mail years were with Harte-Hanks Company, Advo, National Mail-It, and his own direct mail company, the Golden Clipper.

Marvin became one of God’s children while attending Karnack Baptist Church. At his death, he was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church in San Augustine.

He will be deeply missed by those who survive him, particularly his wife of 28 years, Bettie Green Ivie, and a large natural and blended family, including his son-in-law, Robert Steffan (Sherry); son, Steven Williams (Tiffany); daughter, Kelly Williams Camp (John), Angela Williams Wright and Adam Asaf; grandchildren, Morgan Steffan (Chris) and Lauren Steffan, Grayson (Hannah Rose) Williams, Alexandra Williams, Aspen Williams, Grant Williams, Gianna “Gigi” Williams, Taylor Alandt, and Austin Alandt; great-grandchildren, Norah Apple and Sam Apple, and a wonderful host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Taylor Atkins Ivie, the mother of his children; by his second wife Tina Rice Asaf Ivie; and by his children, sons Marvin Barry Ivie, Michael Craig Ivie, and daughter Kimberly Kay Ivie Steffan; also by his granddaughter, Kirstee Williams; his sisters and brothers-in-law Jasmine “Geneva” and Johnny McLendon, Marjorie and Jack Hester, Al Walton, Jean and Don Garrett, Joe Leediker; and his brother, James Cleon (Sonny) Ivie, Jr.

Visitation will be held Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, 316 W. Columbia St, San Augustine, Texas, with the funeral service beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. A private burial will be held at Liberty Hill Cemetery in San Augustine.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Liberty Hill Cemetery or Liberty Hill Baptist Church, 1289 Hwy. 147 North, San Augustine, Texas; to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (hdsa.org), or to the charity of one’s choice.
