Sue McEachern Obituary

Sue (Butts) McEachern, age 88, passed from this life on Tuesday afternoon February 1,2022.

Sue was born to Leola (Clark) Butts and Bryan Butts on March 3, 1933, in San Augustine, Texas. She married the love of her life, Ray Neil McEachern, on September 6,1952, celebrating 68 years of marriage in 2020. She and Ray Neil started dating at 15 and were married at 19 with them both graduating from North Texas University in 1954.

Sue lived most of her life in San Augustine and raised all four of her children there, except the times she was at Hockaday, Southern Methodist University, North Texas State University, and when Ray Neil was in the service, stationed in Omaha, Nebraska. She received her master's degree in education at Stephen F. Austin State University and then started teaching Home Economics in Chireno, where she also served as a counselor and a senior sponsor.

Sue pledged Kappa Alpha Theta when she was at SMU, was a member of the Study Club, and was a lifelong member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

She taught for 35 years before retiring to be able to enjoy spending more time with her children and grandchildren. Her world-famous back scratches had all her grandchildren waiting for them and her love. She loved her family more than anything and made sure they all knew it. Although she could be a pill at times, we all would not change a minute of it. She was a true matriarch and was the glue that kept our big family together and she will be missed more than she will ever know. She was a teacher, a mom, and a Gran to many beside her own. She was one sweet, vibrant lady, who also told you what she thought, even if you were not ready to hear it.

Near the end, she would tell us how she had lived an amazing life. She was so ready to see Jesus and be reunited with her loving husband in Heaven.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Susan McEachern Narta of The Woodlands; her sons, Ray Bryan McEachern of Austin, Edward Harvey McEachern and his wife Royalene of San Augustine, and David Neil McEachern of San Augustine; her grandchildren, Britni VanEman, Lindsey Kornegay, Katey Dotson, Mark McEachern, Dr. Allison Narta, Ashley Lynch, Mike McEachern, Clint McEachern, Megan McEachern, and Paige Narta; great- grandchildren, Madison and Ty VanEman, Ceygan and Klayre Dotson, Peyton and Weston McEachern, Emma and Charli McEachern, and Emma Claire and Lydia Kornegay; brother-in-laws, Jerry McEachern and wife Judy of Buna and Stephen McEachern and wife Sherry of Houston; nieces, Helen Ann Watkins, Mary Tipps, Stephene Bavouset, Dee Kowhler; Karen Hebert; nephews, Brad McEachern and Matt McEachern.

She was proceeded in Death by her husband Ray Neil McEachern; parents Leola and Bryan Butts; grandson Bryan McEachern; sister Helen Tipps; son-in-law Richard Narta; nephew, Clark Tipps; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Exa and Maxie McEachern.
